NASCAR, Sport or not?

Posted on: March 4, 2008 4:11 pm

Whether you like it or not, nascar is recognized as a sport in the US and around the world. Nascar has grown to become the second-most popular professional sport in terms of television ratings inside the U.S., ranking behind only the NFL. Internationally, nascar races are broadcast in over 150 countries. It holds 17 of the top 20 attended sporting events in the U.S., and has 75 million fans who purchase over $3 billion in annual licensed product sales. These fans are considered the most brand-loyal in all of sports and as a result, Fortune 500 companies sponsor Nascar more than any other governing body.

Obviously, not everyone enjoys watching auto racing on tv. Just the same as they might not like watching hockey, golf, or tennis on tv. But watching it on tv isn't the same as watching a game or race live. I have heard people say that they felt the same about nascar as a lot of you here. But once they attended a race, they realized how much fun it could be. Along with how much skill, teamwork, and strategy it takes to win a race. Don't stereotype something just because you don't know much about it. You should try it before you knock it. If you try it and still don't like it, fine. That's an opinon you are entitled to.

NASCAR, Sport or not?

I myself used to think NASCAR was a retarded "redneck" sport only good for branding.  I mean, who wants to watch someone drive a car left for 500 miles?  Oh, there's two road courses?  My bad .... it's still dumb, they're driving a car.  Pssshaw.

I took advice very similiar to yours once with one exception ... I picked a driver first.

I went over the bios and watched (forced myself to watch) a few interviews etc ... and picked Coach Gibbs' Racing's Tony Stewart because I was a 'Skins fan and this guy said what was on his mind.  Tony was cool as a sweaty shirt in a meat locker.

Then I started watching racing.  I found myself following Tony and getting pissed whenever someone would wreck him ... making excuses when he wrecked others ... rooting for him to team up with other drivers (Jr.) ... learning the alliances and the feuds ... I started hating certain drivers (Kurt Busch, J.P. Montoya) and teams (Hendrick) until I became engrossed in it.  Now I talk racin' and strategy ... I'll get pissed when Tony pits with 25 to go and he's runnin' 23rd ... I cringe when Montoya gets anywhere NEAR him ... I yell at NASCAR for throwing arbitrary yellow flags with 6 to go EVERY time Tony's leading.

Racing's a competative strategy driven sport just as much as any other.  I used to hate it, but only a close-minded jack-nut would bash something they know nothing about.  Now, Cricket??  That's a stupid sport!!!!

NASCAR, Sport or not?

I say yes it is a sport. Nascar has become boring to watch on TV. Ten years ago, Nascar on TV was almost as good as being there live. Every Sunday, I try to watch a race but end up napping. Maybe I am just getting old.

NASCAR, Sport or not?

It may not take alot of athletic ability, but it still takes alot of skill. Controlling a vehicle at 180 mph surrounded by cars just a few feet away, drafting, knowing when to go inside/outside, all while not being able to see as well as in a regular car. Plus, you know it's HOT in those cars! So yeah, definetely a sport. I used to not realize how complex it actually is. I didn't realize that there was actually team work involved at first. This is only my second season watching, and I just picked a driver at the beginning of the season, Carl Edwards, who other than the huge hit he just took, is off to a great start.

NASCAR, Sport or not?

I am not a Nascar fan...but to drive a car for 200, 400, or 500 miles on another car's bumper at high speeds requires great concentration, and razor sharp reflexes. Yes, I'd call that athletic.

NASCAR, Sport or not?

Sorry, but I can't go there.  I know it takes great concentration and is not for wimps, but I just can't call sitting behing the wheel of a car a sport.  Not sure what I would call it, maybe a just call it a car race and move on.  If it's a sport to you, more power to ya'.  Personally i find it about exciting as watching paint dry.

NASCAR, Sport or not?

Not a sport.

Personally I have a criteria for what should be called a "sport"

First off, if you never have move your legs in an athletic way. It is not a sport. Buh Bye, any kind of auto racing or horse racing, and Poker. I hate the video game playing will wind up on ESPN too. Golf gets to hang on, due to the amount of Balance that is required to hit the ball well.

2nd, If you must be judged for scoring purposes. It is not a sport. See ya, X-games, Gymnastics, and Cheerleading. Boxing gets to hang on, due to the fact you can knock out your opponent for clear cut victory. Personally I think championships should only get to change hands on a KO. No scoring. Kinda like Pro Wrestling.

3rd, The outcome can't be predeterimined. Pro Wrestling is out.

Finally, Shooting your opponent that doesn't even know they are playing is not a sport. Hunters and Fishermen should quit calling themselves "sportsmen". If you are willing to take down a deer with only a knife, then you are making a sport out of it. There is nothing sportsmen like, about hiding in a tree, and picking off a deer with a high powered rifle.

That isn't to say any of these are not forms of competition and can't be highly entertaining to watch or participate in. I just wouldn't consider them a sport.

NASCAR, Sport or not?

If you think driving almost 200 MPH inches apart just sitting behind the wheel your crazy. I myself think it is a sport. Try driving 500 laps around Bristol Motor Speedway. Its a half mile track with 42 other cars. That takes alot of talent. If you dont think its a sport thats fine., but dont knock it tell you try it.

NASCAR, Sport or not?

What other athlete can shed 10-15 lbs. per event?  Not just that but going that fast for 500 miles with 42 other cars and not hitting someone just inches away.........that's just talent.  Yes, I believe it is a sport.

NASCAR, Sport or not?

Nascar is a sport just like any other except they drive cars around the track going almost 200mph and are inches apart from each other
